Is everything falling apart? Did I almost cry in Tesco? Maybe. Here have a thing I don't like but it's all I have.
The text had come through almost 3 hours ago. 3 hours since those 3 words had flashed up on the screen and she had smiled. There’d been a heart emoji at the end, just like always.
3 hours and so much had changed.
The car that had pulled up was not one she recognised; black and battered instead of the small silver car she expected. Yet a text had come saying ‘outside’ and a hand had waved through the window. Too bright outside to see clearly the person sat in the driver’s seat.
Maybe Leah had bought a new car. Maybe that was the surprise she had mentioned. It was a big fucking surprise if so.
She eagerly locked the door behind her, excited to go for a ride in the new car. She had climbed into the passenger side, automatically leaning in for a welcome kiss to be met with the wrong end of a gun barrel.
“I’m sorry” came a sob from the backseat “he made me type the message so you wouldn’t get suspicious”
“Shut up” And that was all he said before the engine started. She asked no more; too scared to talk, too busy clenching her fists and listening to Leah try to control her tears in the backseat.
The car doors locked automatically when the car began to pull away. She was trapped.
They were trapped.
She glanced in the rear-view mirror, met Leah’s eyes. They were red and puffy but she didn’t seem hurt, just petrified. She tried to convey strength through her gaze, willing them both to be ok. Leah’s tears never stopped.
2 hours later they finally pulled into a car park, disoriented from unrecognisable country lanes she had no idea where they were.
“Where are we? Why are you doing this?”
“I think you know why, love.” The man rolled his eyes and climbed out of the car, his being the only door that would open.
“I think you might want to stay here. Don’t try anything stupid.”
Another hour passed, Leah climbed through to the front seat and they clung to each other as they waited.
She knew, in her heart that she had been expecting this. She just hadn’t wanted Leah involved.
They were going to die and there was nothing she could do to stop it.
