Notebooks stacked neatly to one side. Pens all pointing upwards in the pen pot like soldiers on guard. A steaming cup of tea on a coaster perpendicular to the edge of the desk. Instrumental music playing softly from nearby speakers. Everything is set. The desk is ready. Work can begin.
Except there’s some washing up to be done. The plates piled up precariously and there’s no spoons left.
The kitchen tidied away, the desk is still ready. Cup of tea at the perfect drinking temperature.
Except the bed needs making, the sheets are rumpled and need washing.
The cup of tea has gone cold so another must be brewed.
Couple of biscuits, just to keep the mid-afternoon hunger at bay.
The desk needs a good wipe down, since the biscuits crumbs got everywhere.
New cup of tea. Music still playing but a slightly more upbeat playlist has begun. The pens are still standing straight up; the notebooks were knocked but then lined back up into a neat pile once more. Ready to begin.
Except the cat needs feeding. She’s nudging at legs and meowing.
The calendar hasn’t been flipped over to a new month yet. Must fill in the month ahead. Check when that appointment is because it might be Wednesday but maybe it was Thursday.
The washing machine has finished and the sheets need hanging out, they can probably get a good couple of hours in the sunshine before they have to come in.
Right, sit back down to work.
Except it’s raining and the washing needs to be brought in.
Desk is neat and tidy and ready.
Do some work.
Except the oven needs preheating and if the chicken doesn’t go in soon it’ll never be done on time. And the vegetables need chopping and the tea has gone cold.
The plate has been emptied, the washing up has been done. The cat is out, the washing is in.
Do some work.
